Lasting Impressions

Chapter 9

It was a bogus inspection. The Moeleths loved to detain people who crossed into their part of space and would often extend said space so that it included any travelers they happened to spot. Since the area was in reality a neutral zone, there was nobody to complain to about it.

Heero reminded himself not to grind his teeth as the three leather-faced "inspectors" boarded his shuttle. They smelled faintly like dirty animals and thick teeth jutted a little from their crooked mouths. The female smelt the worst of the three. Charming people, really.

It was she who grunted at them for identification, which everyone supplied immediately. Heero nodded when she read back his alias, then set himself to matching the faces of his crew with the names the inspector read as each and every one of them had also found it necessary to produce false ID.

"Where are you headed?" a second inspector asked, while the first one studied Duo's ID, which Heero knew was flawless.

"Ansirii. We're picking up chemicals," Heero lied easily. That inspector had been looking at Duo's ID a little too long for comfort now.

As if to prove Heero's thoughts correct, the female gestured toward the hall. "There's something about you. I can't quite figure out what it is yet, but I will. Come back into the hall with me for a minute. I want to ask you a few questions." Duo turned toward the hall obediently. Nobody saw that as he did, a cruel smile was beginning to grow on his face.

Heero forced himself not to take violent action against anyone. He told himself repeatedly to remain calm, answering one of the male's questions about their cargo and destination. At last, though, the male ran out of questions and still the female wasn't back with Duo.

Feeling frantic, but acting merely impatient, Heero launched himself into the hall…and stopped short in astonishment.

The inspector was on her knees on the floor, back pressed against the wall by Duo's foot, which dug hard into her stomach. His hand gripped her throat roughly and his teeth were bared. "I said, beg me, bitch," he snarled.

"P-please, please," she whispered in a breathy voice, eyes wide.

"Please what, you nasty whore?" Duo demanded.

"Please kill me, oh, please, please kill me," she begged.

Heero suffered a second shock. This creature was enjoying herself!

Duo was smiling in satisfaction. "How do you want it done? You want me to put a knife between your ribs while I tell you what a slimy little cunt you are? Or I could snap your neck right now. You could die on your knees, so you'll always be remembered as a cocksucker.

The Moeleth woman moaned, her breathing ragged, and from more than just Duo's foot in her stomach.

Recovering himself, Heero ran forward and pulled Duo off of the woman, making sure both of his hands were touching Duo's wrists skin-
to-skin. "Duo, go along with this or I'll kill you myself and save the Moeleths the trouble," he whispered, watching Duo's eyes, waiting for them to change.

He didn't have long to wait. Duo's hard eyes seemed to melt and become his own again. Only then did Heero risk slamming him into the wall. "You bastard! How could you do this to me?" Heero demanded reproachfully. "You promised me! You promised that you'd never call anybody your bitch but me." Heero felt beyond ridiculous even saying it but he thought the Moeleth would buy it.

Still a little high on the Moeleth's touch, Duo replied, "I'm sorry, baby. I got a little carried away. This bitch could never do it for me the way you do."

Heero pushed Duo harder against the wall. "Don't think that flattery is going to excuse this, buddy. You're sleeping in your own bunk for a while." He glared at the Moeleth. "Are you still here?"

Despite their rough looks and questionable hygiene, Moeleths were sensitive about a few things and trying to steal somebody's lover was a big one. By her society's standards, she'd almost made herself a whore. "S-sorry," she stammered, "I'm going now." She all but ran for the exit.

Releasing Duo as he watched her leave, Heero sighed. "I feel so dirty."

Straightening his shirt, Duo looked at him in disbelief. "YOU?? I need a scouring pad and a crate of industrial strength soap. I'm about to tie up the bathroom for the next several hours." He sighed, too. "You were brilliant, by the way. A lovers' tiff should keep them from asking too many questions."

"We can hope," Heero replied, motioning Duo back toward the others.

The female was nowhere in sight. Hilde, Quatre, and Trowa were still politely waiting with the other inspectors. The smaller male looked royally pissed. Heero frowned. If he had an interest in the female, he could make things difficult for them.

Their luck seemed to be holding, however. They passed inspection and were told they were free to go. Heero absolutely couldn't believe it but he wasted no time in saying goodbye and firing the engines. The moment the two ships were no longer connected he was moving, careful not to look too eager, but getting his ass out of Dodge nonetheless.

Once the Moeleth ship was out of close-range scanners Heero forced himself to relax. He added up the days in his head. He was four, almost five, days behind schedule. This run had begun sixteen days before and they were still almost three days journey from the two-week fuel stop, an outpost just the other side of Ansirii air space. Along the way he had picked up three unexpected passengers and made the same number of unscheduled stops. This was not what he'd signed up for.

Heero checked all of his readings and stood to go to his cabin. He was ready for a well-deserved rest. Duo wasn't in his bunk. He was making good on his threat to monopolize the bathroom. Heero lay down on his bunk and closed his eyes, promising himself that tomorrow he'd figure out a way to make up at least some of their lost time. He'd hardly had the thought before he was asleep.

In the bathroom, Duo let the water soothe his well-scoured skin. He was just thinking that he was feeling better when a wave of nausea crashed over him. His vision blurred for a moment. No sooner had it cleared than the room began to spin. His dizziness caused him stumble against the wall.

Just as suddenly as it had begun, it was over. Duo was fine. He almost wondered if he had imagined it. He already knew, he wouldn't mention it to anyone else. After all, Heero had enough to worry about.
